Posing for photos on the iconic Abbey Road zebra crossing is all in a day’s work for Ascent flying instructor, Michelle ‘Mitch’ Lloyd Jones.
Mitch teaches Basic Flying Training at RAF Valley, as part of the UK’s Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS), and was recently invited to take part in the Places She Shapes podcast, hosted by Zoe Smeeth and recorded at the famous Abbey Road Studios
Places She Shapes aims to amplify the voices of inspiring women and explore the moments that have shaped their journeys. It puts the spotlight on those driving and thriving across underrepresented industries and is a chance to hear the sliding door moments, the good, the bad, and the unapologetically ambitious, that have shaped each guest’s journey.
For Mitch, who had an extensive career as a Fast Jet Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor in the Royal Air Force and abroad before joining Ascent, it was a chance to share her story and her love of flying instruction – from being inspired by Blue Peter, to instructing the fast jet pilots of the future, and all the high and low points.
Podcast host, Zoe Smeeth said: “The Places She Shapes team were delighted to welcome Mitch as a guest to the podcast and hear her story. We were all fascinated by the idea that Mitch actually made that childhood dream a reality, so many don’t. Not having any aircraft, military references or role models didn’t stop her. She is remarkable and completely unaware of the fact, which makes it an even better story!”
Mitch works alongside RAF 72 (Fighter) Squadron, instructing trainee fast jet pilots to fly the Texan aircraft, teaching airborne flying skills and monitoring the trainees’ progress.
Basic Flying Training is the second stage of fast jet flying training, and on completion, the trainees get their wings and progress onto the Hawk T2.
Mitch had heard the inspiring stories from the podcast’s first series and didn’t hesitate when given the opportunity to take part in Series 2.
“I don’t feel I had role models or inspiration from other women in my early career, so if I can inspire others listening to this podcast by sharing insight into my own journey then that would be amazing,” she said.
“I feel very lucky that I am still flying and contributing, in some small way, to so many young people’s flying careers. There aren’t many women in my position, so it’s wonderful to share a small part of my story.”
Her day at the studios included hair and makeup by Sonny Lark, professional photos on the ‘Beatles’ zebra crossing and studio recording of the podcast episode.
