Fast Jet Transformation – an agile approach
As Ascent works with its military colleagues to maximise overall output and deliver the intended benefits of the UKMFTS partnership, work being carried out at RAF Valley could act as a blueprint for fast and effective change throughout the Flying Training System.
RAF Valley is home to Fast Jet training, and transformative work on the Fast Jet programme aims to enhance the trainee learning environment and generate efficiencies, while achieving results faster and cheaper than was previously possible.
Fast Jet Transformation has already benefitted from extensive research and development and focusses on the use of innovative technologies, such as extended reality display systems, and innovative ways of working.
Where appropriate, it will draw on aspects of agile project management to increase the pace of Transformation delivery and reduce costs, when compared to more conventionally structured UKMFTS programmes.
The Fast Jet Transformation mantra is: “Delivery through rapid iteration, based on collaboration and appropriate sharing of risk, and accepting changing requirements and technology advancement along the way as a given.”
Fast Jet Transformation is already off to a flying start! Phase 1 includes significant upgrades to existing Texan and Hawk synthetic training equipment:
- 11 devices being upgraded with the integration of virtual and mixed reality visual display systems, to enhance the user experience, create opportunities to improve the syllabus and extract higher value data
- Ultimately Phase 1 will provide ‘Better access to better kit for better preparation!’
Ascent is engaging with instructors, trainees and military colleagues throughout the upgrade process. Their early input will positively influence the programme outcomes.
The agile approach will help Ascent respond quickly to new information and potential new requirements during the implementation phase. It will also help to select the most capable kit at exactly the right time. Benefits will include system improvement impact, fast delivery and low cost.
Through Fast Jet Transformation, Ascent aims to ensure it delivers the best possible trainee learning environment, through cost-effective, innovative use of technology.
In turn, Ascent expects trainee confidence and resilience to improve and skill fade post flight to be reduced, setting the conditions for its trainees to achieve the output standard with fewer re-fly hours. Their core in-syllabus flying hours – crucial to building foundation knowledge, skills and experience – will be maintained. By using any hours saved, Ascent can increase system capacity.
Fast Jet Transformation renews the UKMFTS commitment to supply graduates to the Fast Jet Operational Conversion Units that meet both quality and quantity requirements, in an incredibly challenging operating environment.
Ultimately, in order to be successful, Fast Jet Transformation will need a high level of collaboration and trust between Ascent’s customers, staff and its industry partners. By working collaboratively and with agility, rapid, positive change can be implemented throughout the UKMFTS programme, that will be beneficial to all.
