Ascent’s work experience programme at RNAS Culdrose – now in its second year – is enabling students to immerse themselves in the world of aviation. Over the course of the programme, participants engaged in a variety of hands-on activities that showcased the multifaceted nature of military aviation and the training we provide through Ascent.
One of the highlights, was the chance to work directly with Draken engineers, who were changing a wheel on the King Air Avenger. This practical task not only taught the students about aircraft maintenance, but also emphasised the importance of teamwork and diligence in ensuring flight safety.
Students also had the opportunity to plot navigation routes alongside pilots, giving them a glimpse into the critical planning processes that underpin successful missions. Ground school sessions reinforced their classroom knowledge, while interactive sessions in flight simulators with Qualified Observer Instructors brought theoretical concepts to life.

A standout moment of the programme was the Q&A session with current trainees from 750NAS. This enabled the students to gain insights into the training pathways and experiences of those currently in the field. They were also able to ask questions about the recruitment process, as both students on the programme had military aspirations.
The wider station added to the experience, with tours including the Merlin training facility and the ATC Tower. A visit to 814 Squadron allowed the students to see a Merlin helicopter up close, providing a rare look at the inner workings of the frontline squadron and the operational environment.
For one student, the best part of the programme was a session on the basics of anti-submarine warfare, delivered by Ascent Training Manager, Dale ‘Drac’ Bickford. His passion for the subject and reminiscing about his aircrew days resonated deeply with the students.

Overall, participants were grateful for the opportunity to meet a diverse group of talented professionals. The programme not only equipped them with valuable skills and knowledge, but also inspired a deeper appreciation for the aviation industry and the people who work within it, showcasing how our different skills create a successful training environment, developing and delivering the next generation of military aircrew.
Thanks to all who helped make this such a memorable experience.
