Rear Crew Stage 1

UKMFTS became responsible for Royal Navy Observer training in 2011 and has graduated 26 ab-initio students to the Royal Navy Lynx, Sea King and Merlin helicopter squadrons in addition to 29 instructors and 10 pilots to maintain the training service delivery.  The training is conducted over two sites – RAF Barkston Heath in Lincolnshire which carries out ground school, introductory flying training and elementary navigation training using a GROB Tutor fixed wing aircraft, and RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall where more tactically orientated basic flying training is conducted using a multi-engine Avenger aircraft fitted with an airborne Tactical Mission Trainer.  The service is due to run until mid-2016 when it will be replaced by a follow-on service utilising the same or similar equipment.
